Phases of Mitosis (Mnemonic: PMAT)

Prophase — Chromatin condenses; nuclear envelope breaks down; spindle forms.
Metaphase — Chromosomes align along the metaphase plate (cell equator).
Anaphase — Sister chromatids pulled to opposite poles by spindle fibers.
Telophase — Two new nuclei form; chromosomes begin to uncoil.
+ Cytokinesis — Cytoplasm divides; two daughter cells completed.

Study Tip: The spindle apparatus connects to the centromere region via kinetochore proteins. Correct alignment during metaphase is critical — errors cause aneuploidy.
